Four generations and one chair

I never met my grandmother, but she sounded like a strong and resourceful woman who lived through both the wars….

I recently worked on an Edwardian pin-stuffed tub chair that originally belonged to my granny – one that she upholstered herself years ago. My mum now has the chair and decided it was time to give it a little tender loving care. That’s where I came in…

Back to the frame

Here is the chair in the process of being stripped. It felt very strange to be so close to the work of a woman who I am related to but never knew. The close-up photo shows all the tack holes in the frame, highlighting how many times it has been upholstered!

Here is the chair after a good polish and completely new upholstery. I think Granny would have approved…

The fourth generation

And finally, one of the fourth generation enjoying the chair. My niece, Sorcha, sporting a particularly natty pair of tights….!
